GIS and Land Tenure

Land tenure is the manner in which people live on the land, how they own land, how they relate to their environment and the laws they employ to uphold their rights in property. Society needs systems to manage land tenure and manage our land in general. Geospatial information systems (GIS) are powerful software to manage land and natural resources in areas such as land tenure, land administration, forestry, agriculture, water, ecology, oil and gas, mining and urban studies. GIS are also used to support areas outside of land management such as marketing, vehicle navigation and transportation management. Increasingly, as technology develops, GIS are being coupled with mathematical and statistical modeling techniques to study complex environmental phenomena.

Areas of Study:

  • GIS (Geospatial Information Systems) database design and development
  • Environmental modeling
  • Land administration information systems
  • Coupling of GIS databases and environmental models
  • Land surveying
  • Land use planning
  • Engineering and hydrographic surveying
