The Master of Engineering (MEng) degree was designed for the working engineer who seeks knowledge upgrading or more advanced training. The Departmental requirements are given below and they also apply to the MEng Degree with Specialization in Engineering for the Environment. Additional requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) are described in the FGS Calendar.
For the Master of Science (MSc) degree, equal emphasis is placed on course work and thesis components, in contrast to the MEng degree where greater weight is given to course work. The Departmental requirements are given below. Additional requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) are described in the FGS Handbook of Supervision and Examination.
The doctorate (PhD) in Geomatics Engineering is a research-oriented degree, for those graduate students wishing to pursue a career in research or teaching. The Departmental requirements are given below. Additional requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) are described in the FGS Handbook of Supervision and Examination.

Admission and Residence Requirements:
In addition to the Faculty of Graduate Studies requirements, the admission requirements are as follows:
Holders of BSc or equivalent degrees from Science, Medicine, Kinesiology or other Engineering, if accepted, may be required to take additional senior undergraduate Engineering courses. These courses will not be counted for credit toward the MEng graduate program. Holders of Bachelor’s degrees from disciplines other than Engineering, Science, Medicine or Kinesiology are required to complete a minimum of 10 make-up undergraduate Engineering half-courses with a minimum GPA of 3.00 on a four-point scale before admission.
In exceptional cases, holders of BSc degrees in the same or equivalent Engineering discipline may be admitted with an admission GPA between 2.7 and 3.0 but will be required to complete a minimum of 6 make-up half-courses, or 3 make-up half-courses if they have acceptable industrial experience, with a minimum grade of 3.00 on a four-point scale in each course. At least 4 or 2 of these half-courses, respectively, must be graduate level courses.
Three satisfactory reference letters are also required. In consultation with the Supervisor and the Graduate Coordinator, (i) advanced credit may be requested from FGS for up to three relevant graduate half-courses that have not been previously used towards fulfilling any degree/diploma requirements or taken to bring the grade point average to a required level for admission.; (ii) courses outside the Department may be approved towards the degree requirements; and (iii) the Academic Writing Course, or equivalent, course requirement may be waived for students with prior experience and skills in technical report writing.
There are no residence requirements and the degree must be completed within six years of initial registration.
Academic Requirements (Course-only Route):
Academic Requirements (Thesis Route):
Thesis Proposal Requirements:
A preliminary thesis proposal, consisting of five to eight pages, accepted by the Supervisor, is required no later than 16 months after initial registration. Contents of the thesis, reflecting an applied approach to a problem, should contain new elements of engineering principles and applications.
Thesis Defense Requirements:
A final Oral Examination will be scheduled when the thesis is completed to the satisfaction of the Supervisor. A copy of the completed thesis must be submitted to the Supervisor and the examining committee members at least three weeks before the examination. Details on the composition of the examining committee are given in the FGS Handbook of Supervision and Examination and Faculty of Engineering guidelines in the Graduate Calendar.
Thesis Guidelines are available in the Department. They contain regulations for the number and distribution of copies, binding, typing, etc. Current regulations should be verified shortly before thesis preparation. Note that one electronic copy of the thesis must be submitted to the Publications Secretary in Geomatics Engineering.

The Departmental requirements are given below. Additional requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) are described in the FGS Handbook of Supervision and Examination.
Admission and Residence Requirements
The admission requirements for the MSc degree are the same as those for the MEng degree.
There are no residence requirements. All requirements for the degree must be completed within four (4) calendar years from the time of first registration in the program. A student is generally expected to complete the MSc program within two (2) years.
Academic Requirements:
Thesis Proposal Requirements:
The MSc degree thesis proposal requirements, including the outline of the proposal’s contents, are the same as those for the thesis route MEng degree. The thesis topic, however, should deal with original theoretical or practical research in Geomatics Engineering.
The MSc degree thesis defense requirements are the same as those for the thesis route MEng degree.

In addition to the Faculty of Graduate Studies requirements, the admission requirements are as follows:
Holders of MSc or equivalent degrees from Science, Medicine, Kinesiology or other Engineering, if accepted, may be required to take additional senior undergraduate Engineering courses. These courses will not count for credit toward their doctoral program. Courses outside the Department may be approved towards the degree requirements.
Three satisfactory reference letters are required for Departmental recommendation of admittance.
Satisfactory completion of the PhD program requires a minimum of three (3) academic years of study and research beyond the four-year Honours Bachelor's degree or a minimum of two (2) academic years beyond the Master's Degree. All degree requirements must be completed within six (6) years from the time of first registration in the program. A full-time student is generally expected to complete the PhD program within three (3) years.
Academic Requirements:
Specific course requirements are to be determined by the Supervisory Committee, in consultation with the student. For details on the composition of the Supervisory committee, the FGS Handbook of Supervision and Examination and Faculty of Engineering guidelines (in the Graduate Calendar) should be consulted.
Thesis Proposal Requirements:
The PhD degree thesis proposal requirements, including the outline of the proposal’s contents, are the same as those for the thesis route MEng degree. The thesis, however, must demonstrate the candidate's ability to pursue original research at a high level and represent a distinct advance in knowledge on the subject. The research should be of the recognized standard of technical journals requiring critical review. The Supervisor and Supervisory committee will normally require progress reports every six months during the PhD program.
Candidacy Examination Requirements:
A final evaluation of the suitability of a student to proceed to the PhD degree is made through a Doctoral Candidacy Examination when the original schedule of course work has been completed and the thesis proposal has been accepted by the Supervisory Committee. This examination is required to be held no later than twenty eight (28) months after the first registration and at least six (6) months before the student's final thesis examination. Details regarding the composition of the Examining Committee can be found in the FGS Handbook of Supervision and Examination and Faculty of Engineering guidelines in the Graduate Calendar.
The Candidacy Examination consists of a written and an oral component. It examines the background knowledge of the student in the field of Geomatics Engineering and his/her in-depth knowledge in his/her chosen research specialization.
The results of a Candidacy Examination must be either “pass” or “fail”. A “pass” means that the candidate has the skills to complete his or her PhD research. More details can be found in the FGS calendar and the FGS supervision and examination handbook.
Thesis Oral Defense Requirements:
A final oral examination will be scheduled when the PhD thesis has been completed to the satisfaction of the Supervisor. A copy of the completed thesis should be submitted to each examiner at least four (4) weeks prior to the examination.
