Awards / Accolades
DR GAO's research is centered around the theoretical aspects and innovative applications of satellite-based positioning and navigation systems such GPS. Dr. Gao has been involved in a number of research projects in both governmental and industrial sectors and his research has contributed to the development of several new positioning and navigation systems including commercial products that have been sold world wide. He is the recipient of several academic awards including two US Institute of Navigation best paper awards and a Canadian Institute of Geomatics Intermap award. Prior to joining UofC, Dr. Gao has spent two years as a post-doctoral fellow at the Geodetic Survey of Canada and three years in the industrial sector as a research scientist and R&D manager.
Current research activities:
- Low-cost MEMS-based vehicular navigation systems
- Global, wide area and regional differential GPS positioning technology
- Carrier phase-based precise point positioning systems
- High precision 2D and 3D ionosphere modeling and estimation methods
- Positioning and orientation sensor integration and data fusion
- Internet DGPS and RTK system
- Integration of satellite navigation, geospatial information management and wireless communication systems
Consulting and professional activities:
- Dr. Gao has extensive research experience in both governmental and industrial sectors. He is currently consulting to various government and industrial groups including joint research projects.

- Chair, The International Association of Geodesy (IAG) Commission 4.5 "Next Generation RTK", 2003 - 2007
