Research Interests

Dr. Lichti’s primary research focus is on the use of optical and range imagery for automated 3D object reconstruction. His specific interests are in sensor modelling and calibration, 3D data registration and feature extraction from point cloud data spanning a variety of sensors including digital cameras, airborne laser scanners, terrestrial laser scanners and 3D range cameras. His recent research has focused on a diverse range of applications including structural deformation measurement, fluid mechanics, mineral comminution, cultural heritage and industrial recording and now, as a member of the Centre for Bioengineering Research and Education, biometrology.

Prior to joining the Department of Geomatics Engineering in 2008, he worked as an academic in Perth, Australia starting in 1999 and has held visiting academic positions at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland (twice) and the University of Newcastle, Australia. He is also a co-founder of Scanalyse Pty Ltd, a Perth, Australia based start-up company specialising in wear measurement solutions for the mining industry based on laser scanning technology.

Dr Lichti is currently Chair of the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) Working Group V/3 Terrestrial Laserscanning. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Spatial Science and was Guest Editor for the ISPRS Journal of Photogrammetry & Remote Sensing Theme Issue (January 2008) on Terrestrial Laser Scanning. He is also a reviewer for many scientific journals.
