Research program
Dr Marceau's research program is entitled Environmental Geocomputation, an emerging discipline dedicated to the solution of complex environmental problems using advanced geocomputational approaches. The goal of her research program is to develop, within the post-normal science paradigm, intelligent computer-based information systems to solve complex environmental management problems and improve decision-making. It is based on the theoretical foundations of Geographic Information Science, Complexity Theory, and Geocomputation and involves the development and integration of innovative approaches in remote sensing, geographic information systems, individual-based modeling (cellular automata and multi-agent systems), and geovisualization for environmental resource management.
Current research projects
- Modeling the influence of different management scenarios to reduce deforestation in an agricultural region of Southern Quebec using a geographic cellular automaton model
- Development of a vector-based cellular automaton that allows changes of state and shape of meaningful entities composing a landscape
- Modeling whale-watching activities in the Saguenay-St.Lawrence Marine Park (SSLMP) in Quebec using a multi-agent system
- Investigating sustainable scenarios of urban expansion in the City of Calgary, Alberta, using a cellular automaton and a multi-agent model
- Multiscale analysis of remote sensing data to improve automated land-use classification
